Though this holiday and its patron saint is quite mysterious, they all seem to suggest that Valentine was a sympathetic, heroic, and most of all a truly romantic figure. There are suggestions throughout history that Valentine acted in compassionant and loving ways toward others. So the legend is carried out in our holiday celebration of true romantic gift giving.
